Masquerade

Heard on a show I watched recently on Netflix.

“Love is a masquerade.”

The phrase made me think about everything we do to find love, sustain it, nurture it, believe in it, and try our best to not feel the often inevitable pain when dabbling with this emotion.

Love is a masquerade.
An act we play out time and again.
Ignoring doubts, laughing away warnings
we follow our heart through sunshine and rain.

Love is theatre.
Unadulterated entertainment and laughter.
Happiness and endless drama
sometimes heartbreak and disaster.

Love is an investment
of time, patience, feelings.
Something to be nurtured
even through complicated dealings.

Love is a sacrifice
propped up by changes.
Of identity, personality, and emotions
until even to ourselves we become strangers.

Love is a mystery.
Intriguing, confusing, insane.
Are we just masochists
that we continuously chase this sweet pain?

Yes, love is a masquerade.
The parts we play, the risks we take
bring priceless moments of happiness
despite fears, doubts, and heartache.
